The Red Devils have signed Villarreal centre back Eric Bertrand Bailly for a £30m fee. The defender, however, is subject to a work permit. The 22 year old Ivory Coast defender has agreed on a four year deal with the club. He becomes, new manager, Jose Mourinho’s first signing with the club.
Bailly made 47 appearances for Villarreal since he joined them in January last year. He had been an important part of the Spanish Club’s defense in the last season.
“It’s a dream come true to be joining Manchester United.”
He looks forward to working with Mourinho and the United side. Mourinho too had some words to say for the defender. He says,
“Eric is a young central defender with great natural talent. He has progressed well to date and has the potential to become one of the best around.”
Manchester United’s defense had been poor last season, with several injuries, and players not being at their top form. Eric Bailly’s signing should help to strengthen the side’s defense, bringing a fair amount of pace and skill. However, his lack of experience may be a concern to United supporters.
Though the defender hasn’t played much professional football, he has the ability to learn and adjust to a Premier League style of play. But will he add value to the Old Trafford side?
